TMS for Anxiety
Understand the difference between anxiety accompanying depression and a primary anxiety disorder, and explore whether TMS fits your care.
Recognizing anxiety
Anxiety becomes a concern when worry, fear, or physical symptoms interfere with daily life. Generalized anxiety, panic disorder, social anxiety, and phobias can require different treatment approaches.
- Persistent worry or worst-case thinking
- Restlessness, difficulty concentrating, or disturbed sleep
- Muscle tension, racing heart, or digestive discomfort
Anxiety with depression is different from a primary anxiety disorder
BrainsWay Deep TMS has FDA clearance for reducing anxiety symptoms associated with major depressive disorder in appropriate patients. This does not mean it is cleared for every anxiety disorder or panic attacks on their own.
Dr. Drell reviews whether anxiety accompanies depression or represents a separate condition, as well as your previous medication and psychotherapy. TMS for a primary anxiety disorder may be considered off-label; the clinical rationale and uncertainties should be discussed individually.
Your treatment and coverage
TMS involves magnetic stimulation without surgery or sedation. Schedule and stimulation settings depend on your treatment plan. You continue working with your current prescribing clinician.
Insurance coverage depends on the diagnosis, protocol, and your plan. Treatment for a primary anxiety disorder may require self-payment. Our office can review benefits and explain costs before you begin.
Safety and expectations
TMS has risks, including scalp discomfort, headache, and a rare risk of seizure. Your team reviews medical conditions, medications, implants, and other precautions before treatment. Results vary, and TMS is not a replacement for ongoing medical or psychiatric care.
